A man who allegedly tried to take a gun away from a sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed by deputies who had forced their way into a house to serve a search warrant, authorities said Saturday.
No deputies were injured in the shooting, which occurred as they tried to serve a search warrant at the house at 9548 Bluford Ave. in an unincorporated county area near Whittier at 7:35 p.m. Friday, sheriff’s Deputy Fidel Gonzales said.
“Deputies forced their way into the house when no one came to the door and they heard people running around inside,” Gonzales said. Moments after they broke into the house, a 41-year-old man fought with one of the deputies for his gun, he said. “Shortly thereafter the suspect started to run from the deputies yelling that he was going to kill them,” Gonzales said.
Deputies thought the suspect was armed and fired their guns, hitting him once in the back, twice in the left thigh and once in the right leg, he said.
The man, whose name was withheld, was taken to Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, where he died at 8:15 p.m., Gonzales said.
