Crusader Sword, ridden by Randy Romero, rallied from last place to win the $174,300 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., running the 6 1/2 furlongs on a sloppy track in 1:18 3/5 and paying $4.60. He overtook Bill E. Shears with a furlong to go and won by a half-length.
In the supporting feature, Happy Valley Farm’s Talakeno, who upset grass champion Manila two weeks ago in the Bernard Baruch Handicap, came right back to win the $155,150 Saratoga Budweiser Breeder’s Cup by a length over Lighting Leap. Talakeno covered the 1 1/16 miles over the soft turf course in 1:49 2/5 and paid $3.80.
The victory snapped a 25-race losing streak for jockey Angel Cordero, who is on the verge of having his 11-year grip on the Saratoga riding title broken by Jose Santos. With two days left in the meeting, Santos has won 25 races to 19 for Cordero.
