Tennis Roundup : Svensson and Pate Advance to Today’s Challenge Final

Unseeded Jonas B. Svensson of Sweden defeated seventh-seeded Henri Leconte of France, 6-3, 6-3, and eighth-seeded David Pate edged unseeded Paul Annacone, 7-6, 6-4, Saturday to advance to today’s final of the $150,000 Hamlet Challenge Cup tournament at Jericho, N.Y.
Svensson, ranked 25th in the world, upset fifth-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden and third-seeded Pat Cash of Australia, the Wimbledon champion, earlier in the tournament.
Svensson, 21, stopped Leconte, ranked 13th in the world, with three service breaks and did not lose a service game. He broke Leconte’s serve in the eighth game of the first set, aided by two errors and a double fault by Leconte.
Top-seeded Martina Navratilova beat Lisa Bonder, 6-2, 7-5, in a quarterfinal match and later defeated Robin White, 6-3, 6-1, in a semifinal of the $54,000 KISS 100 Invitational at Bryn Mawr, Pa.
In the other semifinal, second-seeded Helen Kelesi of Toronto defeated Kathy Jordan, 6-3, 6-4. Kelesi, 17, will be facing Navratilova for the first time.
The Bonder-Navratilova match was scheduled for Friday but was postponed because of rain.
Sixth-seeded Sylvia Hanika of West Germany used an aggressive net game to upset fourth-seeded Lori McNeil, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, and reach the final of the $150,000 United Jersey Bank tournament at Mawah, N.J.
Hanika will face third-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, who beat her sister, Katerina, 6-3, 6-4.
Peter Lundgren of Sweden beat third-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India, 6-2, 7-5, to reach the final of the NYNEX Open at Rye Brook, NY.
Lundgren will oppose John Ross in today’s final. Ross rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Richard Matusewski in the other semifinal.
