CARE, the international relief and development organization, has been around for 40 years, providing food for millions of people on a regular basis, setting up health-nutrition-education programs, undertaking water, agricultural and conservation
projects.
On Monday, some of those accomplishments will be noted during “Thanks for Caring” a two-hour celebrity-filled variety special slated for 8 p.m. on KABC-TV Channel 7 (following the ABC football
telecast).
William Shatner, Morgan Fairchild and Robert Guillaume host the program, which has Dick Clark as executive producer. On the show, the 40th anniversary CARE Commendation will be presented to Dennis Weaver for his “sensitivity to . . . and untiring dedication to end human suffering.” Weaver is a co-founder (with Valerie Harper) of LIFE (Love Is Feeding Everyone), an organization that distributes surplus food from markets to the homeless and hungry.
The special’s opening number features Ben Vereen and the international Children’s Choir (seen on the cover). The talent lineup also includes Melba Moore, Gary Morris, Pia Zadora, the Fifth Dimension, Reba McIntire, Rich Little, Harry Blackstone, the Oak Ridge Boys and Maureen McGovern.
