Costa Rica Lets War Crimes Suspect Stay

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Costa Rica has granted a temporary visa to a Ukrainian wanted in the Soviet Union for crimes allegedly committed during World War II, a government official says.
Interior Minister Ronaldo Ramirez, said Friday that Bohdan Koziy, 64, and his wife, Yaroslava, received temporary visas despite an extradition request earlier this year by the Soviet Union.
Moscow has accused Koziy of involvement in the Nazi killing and deportation of Ukrainian Jews in World War II.
Ramirez, however, said insufficient evidence was presented to warrant Koziy’s extradition. Costa Rican authorities first became aware that Koziy was in the country in August, 1985.
