About 10,000 Lebanese demonstrators marched across the Green Line that splits Beirut into Christian and Muslim sectors to protest the nation’s worsening economic crisis. The protest was sponsored by the General Confederation of Labor Unions. The confederation, which has Muslim and Christian members, has threatened to launch a nationwide strike on Nov. 5 if the authorities do not act to solve the crisis. Meanwhile, the central bank ordered a halt in dealings with foreign currencies after the Lebanese pound--once the soundest Middle East currency--plunged to a record low of 410 to the dollar.
