The Senate Agriculture Committee approved a $1.3-billion package of potential budget savings but said that it was unlikely to cut farm income. The plan would empower the agriculture secretary to require corn and wheat producers who participate in federal farm programs to remove additional acreage from production, for a saving of more than $1.2 billion in fiscal 1988. However, lawmakers said it was unlikely that crops in storage would reach a level that would trigger the additional acreage curbs.
