America West airline asked a federal appeals court in Washington to delay this week’s scheduled merger of USAir with Piedmont, charging that the deal would unfairly restrict its ability to expand. America West contended that its attempts to penetrate the East Coast market would be unfairly prevented by a merger of the two regional airlines that was approved last week by the Transportation Department.
