Woman Completes Solo Sail

NEW YORK — A 21-year-old woman completed a 2 1/2-year, 27,000-mile solo sail around the world today and said the best moment of the trip was the end. “I wouldn’t want to do it again, not alone,” said Tania Aebi after her arrival at the South Street Seaport.
She said the biggest lesson of her trip was, “The world is a pretty nice place.” As she clambered off her boat, Aebi was presented with roses and champagne by her family and her boyfriend. Aebi had been at sea since Sept. 16, when she left Gibraltar on the last leg of a trip that began May 28, 1985. Her father, Ernst Aebi, said he bought her the $40,000 sloop Varuna because it was cheaper than a college education.
