Southern Section Volleyball Playoffs : Newport Harbor Wins Behind Evans

Jenny Evans had 13 kills and 3 blocks to lead Newport Harbor High School to a 15-1, 15-3, 15-4 sweep over Santa Monica Thursday in the first round of the 5-A Southern Section first-round girls’ volleyball playoffs at Newport Harbor.
Anastasia Arnold added 7 kills and 4 blocks and teammate Sienna Curci had 25 assists and 4 service aces for Newport Harbor, which is the top-seeded team in the 5-A Division.
Newport Harbor (17-0) plays Culver City in the second round Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
In other 5-A matches:
Mater Dei 3, Laguna Beach 1--Wendy Dumbolton and Lisa Miccio had 13 kills each and Debbie Quam had 24 assists for Mater Dei (12-3), which won at Laguna Beach. Laguna Beach ends 10-6.
Mater Dei will play host to Corona del Mar in a quarterfinal match Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Corona del Mar 3, Laguna Hills 0--Laurie Sawin had 15 kills and 5 digs for Corona del Mar (19-2) which won at home, 15-9, 15-5, 15-1. Laurie Wooten had 11 kills and Karen Smith 10 for Corona del Mar, the second-seeded team in the 5-A. Corona del Mar’s only two losses this season have been to top-seeded Newport Harbor.
