GM to Furlough 4,600 at Van Nuys Plant for a Week

General Motors will lay off 4,600 workers at its Van Nuys plant for a week in January because of a slump in car sales, according to plant manager Ernest Schaefer.
The Van Nuys plant, which had been scheduled to resume production Jan. 4 after a holiday break, now will not reopen until Jan. 11, Schaefer said.
GM blamed the layoff on slow sales of its Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds, which are made in Van Nuys. Camaro purchases were off 27% in October from the month before, and Firebird sales were down 21%, according to Automotive News, a trade magazine.
“There’s just too much inventory out in the field,” Schaefer said. “To lower that, we’re taking a week off.”
