Zimmer Named to Manage Last-Place Cubs

Don Zimmer, who coached under then manager Jim Frey in 1984 when the Chicago Cubs won the National League East title, was hired as the Cubs’ manager, this time to work under General Manager Frey.
The Cubs finished last in their division last season, and both Manager Gene Michael and General Manager Dallas Green resigned.
Frey, who had gone into the Cubs’ broadcast booth, was hired as director of baseball operations last week. Zimmer, who has previously managed at San Diego, Boston and Texas, was a coach for the NL West champion San Francisco Giants last season.
“This is not a last-place club,” Zimmer said.
