Space invaders won’t fly at the Del Amo Fashion Center.
The Torrance City Council last week rejected a request to establish a video game center with 50 electronic games at Sears, despite letters of support from other shopping malls with video game arcades.
Council members unanimously agreed that the video games and the noise they create are incompatible with the retail environment of Del Amo, which bills itself as the largest covered mall in the country.
With the massive mall contributing nearly $4 million a year in sales tax revenues to the city, the council did not want to do anything to create a magnet for young people that might turn off well-heeled shoppers. Mayor Katy Geissert suggested that the council wants people to use the mall for shopping, not entertainment.
