San Diego Sports Et cetera : Aztec Women Lose by a Free Throw in Closing Seconds

Rachel Bouchard made the second of 2 free throw attempts with 5 seconds left in the game as the University of Maine defeated San Diego State, 66-65, in the final of the Maine women’s basketball tournament Saturday in Bangor, Maine.
San Diego State (1-1) was led by Alison Smith’s 22 points and 9 rebounds. Dee Davis added 10 points and Chana Perry had 9 points and 12 rebounds.
The score was tied twice in the final 28 seconds before Bouchard’s free throw. Jessica Haynes’ desperation half-court shot for SDSU bounced off the rim.
SDSU held a 52-46 rebound advantage but made only 13 of 22 free throws to 13 of 18 for Maine (2-0).
Sonya Carter had 26 points to lead United States International University to a 99-73 victory over Southern Utah State in the final of the USIU/Pepsi Great West Classic at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.
Daisy Mendes added 21 points and Siona Murray and Amanda Spray had 16 each for USIU (2-0).
In the consolation game, Cal State Northridge defeated National University of Mexico, 73-50.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Dave DeVries and Jeff Prather had 24 points each to lead Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Ill.) to an 87-78 victory over Point Loma Nazarene College at Northwest Nazarene College in Napa, Idaho.
Olivet (4-1) took first-half leads of 15-4 and 24-7 on its way to a 47-36 halftime advantage.
Sophomore center Steve Riddle led PLNC (2-2) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Guards Miguel Gutierrez and Shawn Stroud had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
PLNC had 29 turnovers and was outshot 57% to 44% from the field.
The game was part of Northwest Nazarene’s 75th anniversary celebration.
Gary Ware scored 31 points and Danl Williams added 19 to lead Grand Canyon College to a 116-72 victory over UC San Diego in the championship game of the Triton Tipoff Tournament at UCSD.
Grand Canyon (5-1) led by only 50-42 at halftime but buried UCSD with a 66-point second half. UCSD (2-1) was led by Kirk Kramer who scored 12 points.
In the tournament consolation game, Occidental College defeated UC Santa Cruz, 76-68.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
The Francis Parker girl’s volleyball team defeated Sierra Madre Maranatha, 15-13, 15-12, 15-11, in the final of the Southern California Division III regional at Francis Parker High.
Tina Harris had 17 kills and Heide West added 15 kills for Francis Parker (26-3).
Francis Parker will play the Northern California champion Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton for the state title.
Maranatha, from Pasadena, was the Southern Section champion and had been undefeated in its previous 19 matches.
