A missed free throw by Cal State Fullerton’s Felicia Benson with no time remaining on the clock Saturday ensured Cal Poly Pomona an 86-85 victory over Fullerton in the championship game of the second annual Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball tournament at Titan Gym.
Pomona, which led, 86-74, with 2:07 remaining, survived a Fullerton rally in which the Titans pulled within one in the final seconds. With 15 seconds remaining, Pomona’s Niki Bracken, who scored 30 points, missed a free throw, giving Fullerton a chance to tie the game. But Benson missed the first of two free throws, giving the Broncos the win.
“I am really disappointed, but I thought we played very hard and showed great ability to come back,” said Titan Coach Maryalyce Jeremiah.
Pomona’s Cathy Gooden, a 5-foot, 5-inch junior guard, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Gooden scored 28 points, including four 3-point shots.
Fullerton was led by senior forward Wendy Anae with 18 points and Amy Torczon, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
In the consolation game, Sam Houston State beat the University of San Francisco, 57-45.
