Former world heavyweight champion Mike Weaver stopped previously unbeaten Johnny Du Plooy in Johannesburg, South Africa, after the South African failed to answer the bell for the seventh round of their scheduled 10-round bout.
Du Plooy’s handlers said their fighter decided to quit because of an injured left hand. His record is 17-1.
Weaver, a 35-year-old native of Texas, scored consistently with right jabs and hooks to the head.
Weaver weighed 209 pounds, Du Plooy 208.
