Charles Gilpin, who in 1920 became the first black Broadway star with a leading role in Eugene O’Neill’s “The Emperor Jones,” is himself now the focus of a New York play, “The Emperor Charles.” Written by Spencer Vibbert, the play explores the confrontations between O’Neill and Gilpin--who died in 1930--over the use of racial slurs in works of art.
