More than two out of three Californians believe that sexually explicit materials on safe sex are necessary to educate some groups in acquired immune deficiency syndrome prevention measures, according to a statewide poll conducted by San Francisco State University’s Public Research Institute. The poll--co-sponsored by the group California Common Cause--found that 68% of those surveyed favored the use of sexually explicit materials for certain groups, 24% opposed them and 8% were not sure. The survey found that blacks had the highest rate of approval, 79%, while Latinos and Asians--63% approval--were among those least inclined to favor the materials. Richard DeLeon, a political science professor at the university, noted that the survey respondents with the least formal education were the ones most likely to support the use of sexually explicit materials.
