Chadian troops killed 23 Libyan soldiers and captured seven in repulsing a military convoy that attempted to enter the country by way of Sudan, a Chadian army communique said. It said the Chadians suffered no casualties in the fighting in the eastern region of Goz-Beida. Although Libya and Chad agreed to a cease-fire three months ago, Chad has complained that Libya is using Sudan as a staging ground and has violated the agreement with attacks launched from Sudan’s Darfour mountains. Libya’s official news agency JANA has denied violating the truce and said Chad’s charges were influenced by the United States.
