Local News in Brief : Malibu Building Report

In an effort to reduce Los Angeles County’s liability in landslide areas around Malibu, the Department of Public Works is recommending tougher requirements for building permits in the beach community.
A preliminary report that will be distributed to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday lists several recommendations, including one that would restrict building permits in the hillside areas “or areas of known geologic hazards,” such as Big Rock Mesa, unless the sites pass an inspection by licensed geologists.
The report also includes a recommendation for the county to draft an ordinance that would ban any home sales in Malibu until experts certify that the property’s septic system works properly.
About 200 lawsuits have been filed against the county and the state stemming from a massive 1983 landslide along Big Rock that could result in a liability of up to $500 million. No public hearing is scheduled on the report.
