Contra Aid and Arias Peace Plan
Your editorial “Rejecting Peace” (Dec. 23) is right: Our Congress voted to reject the Arias peace plan when they voted more aid to the Contras. Even the scandal of the illegal CIA activities in arming the Contras didn’t stop our officials from voting to continue the slaughter!
A Sandinista arms buildup, as reported in headlines days before the vote, was no new phenomenon. What government would not react this way to protect civilians from maiming, murder, gang rape, castration, facial peeling, beheadings and exhibiting heads on poles? All congressmen know of these terrorist acts, documented by religious observers, carried out as part of our openly declared policy of “low-intensity warfare.”
Reagan said, “Test me!” So who’s afraid to test him? The weak-kneed congressmen who voted more money for the Contras should read the popular book about learning to say “no.”
