China Issues Permit for Nuclear Plant

BEIJING — Chinese authorities Wednesday issued a construction permit for a nuclear power plant that opponents say will be too close to Hong Kong and may not be safe.
The National Nuclear Safety Administration decided to grant the permit to the Daya Bay nuclear power plant after a six-month study concluded that the plant’s design meets Chinese and French nuclear safety standards, the official New China News Agency reported. Two French-made 900,000-kilowatt pressurized water reactors are to be built at the site in Guangdong province, 30 miles north of Hong Kong.
Residents in Hong Kong, which will receive about 70% of the plant’s electricity when it is completed in 1992, have campaigned against the plant.
