Student journalists representing Corona del Mar High School’s newspaper, the Trident, were honored Thursday for winning the recent Journalism Medal of Honor competition.
The county Board of Education presented the winner’s plaque to the students Thursday.
The competition was part of the convention in Orange County of Medal of Honor winners last fall. High schools were challenged to put out a special edition of their newspaper concerning the Medal of Honor. Fourteen Orange County high schools participated, and Corona del Mar High was named the winner.
Honored during Thursday’s ceremony were teacher Linda Mook, the adviser for the school paper; Katherine Nelson, a senior and editor of the paper; Eric Antebi, a junior and editorial editor; Jim Hsu, a senior and staff writer, and Patrick Yoon, a junior and news editor. Allan Waterman, activities director at the high school, accompanied the group to the board meeting.
Student editor Nelson told the Board of Education that the high school journalists learned much from the Medal of Honor winners. “This has been a special experience for all of us,” she said.
“It affected us a lot . . . These (Medal of Honor winners) had such courage and absolute faith in our country. It’s made me really appreciate the freedom we have in the United States.”
