Ecuadorean voters rejected the hand-picked candidate of conservative, pro-American President Leon Febres Cordero, setting up a runoff election May 8 between two left-leaning political leaders. The top candidates, Rodrigo Borja, 52, of the Democratic Left Party, and populist ex-Mayor Abdala Bucaram, 35, both have pledged to distance Ecuador from Washington, renew severed diplomatic ties with Nicaragua and take a harder line on paying Ecuador’s $9.2-billion foreign debt. Borja collected 20.4% of the 3.5 million ballots cast and Bucaram won 15.4%, edging out Sixto Duran, 66, the nominee of Febres Cordero’s Social Christian Party.
