Evacuation Orders Lifted for Most of 5,000 in Toxic Spill

FREMONT, Ohio — Authorities Friday lifted evacuation orders for all but about 200 of the 5,000 people who fled their homes after a broken pipeline sent toxic fumes across two counties in northwest Ohio.
But water intakes remained closed in Fremont, pending the results of tests by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The intakes on the Sandusky River were closed at 4 p.m. Thursday, when flammable toluene from a ruptured Sun Refining & Marketing Co. pipeline reached the city of 18,000 people.
