A union representing Vatican lay employees announced that its members, as part of a protest over a change in their payday, would donate part of their salaries to Pope John Paul II to help feed the poor. The Assn. of Lay Vatican Workers, which represents about 1,500 employees, said workers would stage an “active strike” at the start of each shift next Monday. The workers will do their jobs but will donate their first three hours’ pay “directly to the Holy Father,” the union said. The action was called to protest the Vatican’s plan to pay workers at the end of each month, like most employees in Italy, instead of the first of the month.
