GTE California won approval from the Federal Communications Commission to build a cable television network in Cerritos to test a broad spectrum of voice, video and data services. Cable television programming will be provided under a leasing arrangement with Apollo CableVision, the CATV franchise holder in Cerritos. A coaxial network will be built first, but GTE Service Corp. plans to add a separate fiber-optic facility to allow for a comparison of that technology, coaxial cable and standard telephone lines in carrying communications services to selected homes.
