Farm Workers

Why do we allow our brothers and sisters, our fellow human beings who harvest and cultivate the food we eat, to be treated as animals? Can’t we afford to see that they are protected from the inhumane conditions pictured in The Times (Part I, April 4) on U.S. farms? Why do we continue to exploit our hardest working brothers and sisters in order to save money on our “daily bread?”
Food in the U.S. is the cheapest in the world. I for one will be happy to pay whatever is necessary in food costs and enforcement costs to see that the produce I eat is not bought at the expense of decent lives for my fellow human beings.
