Reagans’ Income Up, Taxes Down
How happy it made me to read in The Times that President and Mrs. Reagan’s 1987 tax liability was $6,000 less than in 1986 and with increased income (Part I, April 9). Unfortunately, my experience was the opposite--same income and increased taxes.
In discussing our tax liabilities, I find my friends and I have all had to pay more in taxes.
It appears that, as usual with the Reagan Administration, the tax decreases were for the wealthy and perhaps those with very low incomes. Middle-income taxpayers are paying more.
The “simplified” tax forms were even more complex than usual. This is good news for tax accountants but hard on people who try to prepare their own returns.
