Mayor Koch Endorses Gore

NEW YORK — Mayor Edward I. Koch endorsed Democratic candidate Sen. Albert Gore Jr. of Tennessee for President today, saying he is “head and shoulders above his rivals” in his support for Israel.
Both men have found common ground by attacking civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, also a candidate, and Koch has said that although Masschusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis is an acceptable candidate, Gore’s positions on major issues are closest to the mayor’s. Koch has criticized Jackson for avoiding the issues and said Jews and supporters of Israel would be “crazy” to vote for him.
