Harry and Leona Helmsley pleaded innocent to federal charges of tax fraud. The real estate developer and his wife, the “queen” of the Helmsley hotel chain’s advertising campaign, pleaded not guilty to similar state charges last week. At the five-minute hearing before U.S. Magistrate Nina Gershon, defense attorney Steven Kaufman called the twin federal and state indictments an unprecedented “twofer--two prosecutions based on the same set of facts.” The Helmsleys, whose net worth is estimated to be $1.4 billion, were released without bail.
