Maoist guerrillas killed a provincial ruling party mayor and five peasants in three attacks in Peru’s Andes mountains, police reported. Guerrillas from the group Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) left the body of Sergio Canales Nalvarte, mayor of the village of Macachacra in Ayacucho province, tied up with a sign around his neck reading “Thus Die the . . . Traitors of the Armed Struggle,” police said.
