ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland — Ships and planes searched the North Atlantic today for about 25 crew members from a Greek fuel tanker that broke in two and caught fire, U.S. Coast Guard officials said. By midday the bow had sunk and the stern was burning.
Searchers believed there might be survivors from the 500-foot Athenian Venture because three rafts and a lifeboat were missing, said Petty Officer Larry Lawrence, a Coast Guard spokesman. One lifeboat was burned in its cradle. The tanker reportedly was on its way from Gibraltar to New York.
