With all the excitement surrounding Castle Park pitcher Dawn Wood’s bid for a third consecutive perfect game, it was easy to miss Mary Mundry’s performance.
Mundry, a senior shortstop who is the only four-year girls’ varsity athlete in the history of the school, had a couple of good outings last week to help her highly publicized teammate.
Mundry was 2 for 3 with 3 runs batted in and 4 runs scored as Castle Park defeated Coronado, 19-0, last Tuesday. She also tied a San Diego Section record with 7 stolen bases (shared by Karen Hightower of Lincoln, 1978, and Chaylene Roberts of Valhalla, 1980).
In Friday’s 1-0 victory over Marian, Mundry singled in the game’s only run in the third inning.
Debbie Corbett, a senior at Madison, threw a 3-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 5-0 victory over Patrick Henry last Tuesday. Corbett (9-1) also hit a 2-run homer.
GYMNASTICS
Alicia Santana, a senior at El Cajon Valley, won the all-around title in the optional category at the Torrey Pines Gymnastics Invitational. Santana finished first in the floor exercises (9.25) and second in the vault (8.6), uneven bars (9.1) and balance beam (8.55).
