Syrian President Hafez Assad has pledged to try and gain the release of American hostages in Lebanon, said Vernon A. Walters, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. “I can confirm that I will do everything I can to return the hostages to you safely,” Walters quoted Assad as saying. Walters made the comment during an interview on CNN’s “Newsmaker Saturday” program after he returned to New York from a tour of Middle East capitals. Nine Americans are believed to be held captive in Lebanon.
