Waldheim Begins Saudi Arabia Visit

JIDDA, Saudi Arabia — Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, under fire in the West but revered by Arabs, received a warm welcome when he arrived in Saudi Arabia on Saturday for a three-day visit aimed at boosting economic ties.
Waldheim, accompanied by Foreign Minister Alois Mock and State Industry Minister Rudolf Streicher, was met by King Fahd at the airport of this Red Sea port.
He was due to dine at the king’s new seaside palace, built on an artificial island off the coast, and start official talks today.
