Local News in Brief : Drowning Victims Named

A somber undertone was expected at commencement ceremonies at Palmdale High School Wednesday night, after two seniors who apparently cut class the day before their graduation were drowned as they swam in a weed-choked mountain lake.
The two Littlerock students were identified as Kye Melvin, 17, and Michael Pettit, 18. They skipped classes Tuesday for a trip to Jackson Lake in the Angeles National Forest near Wrightwood, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Kathryn Nielsen said.
They had swum out about 20 feet when a friend saw them struggling, but by the time he reached them, both had disappeared. Sheriff’s divers found their bodies in 8 to 15 feet of water.
