Street Numbers

Part-time pizza deliveryman Dan Frazier addressed a very real problem with insight and accuracy (letter, June 9). As a Los Angeles city fireman I know how missing, hidden, or hard to read street numbers on homes and businesses slow down our responses to medical, fire, and other emergency dispatches.
The law requires that the numbers be big enough (at least as high “in inches” as 1/10th the distance “in feet” from the street) and visible from the roadway. They must be in contrasting color to the mounted surface and should be high enough to not be blocked by large vans or growing vegetation.
People sometimes ask why don’t “they” do something about this or that problem. During every inspection, I check for this problem and, if appropriate, give a notice of a safety violation. It surprises me how often this is the case.
If Frazier’s other skills match his ability to articulate this very real problem, he should be running the pizza business, not its deliveries.
