A driver who was fleeing police when he killed a San Carlos man in a collision pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder.
Rodney Capell, 27, of San Diego, faces 25 years to life in prison and could receive an added five-year sentence because of a previous robbery conviction.
A murder charge was dismissed against his brother, Trenton Capell, 22, who was a passenger, but the younger Capell pleaded guilty to three counts of robbery involving purse snatchings. He faces a maximum prison term of seven years and a $10,000 fine.
Ronald Stone, 29, died in the Jan. 20 collision at Lake Murray Boulevard and Baltimore Drive in La Mesa.
The brothers entered their pleas before Municipal Judge William Howatt Jr., who was acting as a Superior Court judge.
Sentencing for Rodney Capell was scheduled July 21 and for his brother July 26.
Both remain in County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
