Orange County May Lose ’89 Visit From New World

Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the Miami-based New World Symphony will not return to Orange County next summer unless sufficient funds are committed in advance, probably by mid-November, according to officials at the Orange County Philharmonic Society.
The recent, first visit to the county by the orchestra, co-sponsored by the society, the Orange County Performing Arts Center and UC Irvine, lost $250,000, a spokesman for the Society said Friday.
A series of concerts and workshops from June 24 to July 7 had been budgeted at $500,000, only half of which was recouped through ticket sales and contributions.
