A fugitive murderer who led a “model life” after fleeing a Massachusetts prison during a weekend furlough in 1974 was arrested Monday at the Marina del Rey real estate firm where he worked, officials said.
Arthur Bembury, 37, who has been using the alias Franklin Douglas Hanare, was married and raising a family, with three young children, according to Detective John Petievich.
Bembury told police that he had worked for the Crippled Children’s Society and for six years had been a county probation officer.
Petievich said Massachusetts officials told local police that Bembury might be selling real estate here under an assumed name.
Bembury was convicted of second-degree murder for killing a woman after she told him that he could no longer date her 14-year-old daughter.
