PLANTATION, Fla. — The smoke alarm went off when fire broke out in a retirement home, but an employee turned it off because it previously had been set off as a prank, police said Monday.
One resident of the Golden Age Retirement Home burned to death in the fire Sunday and 17 others were taken to hospitals, most suffering from smoke inhalation. Four rescue workers and a man who aided them also were treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion.
