LONDON — An Air France jetliner carrying 170 people came within 400 feet of a cargo jet Monday, but air traffic controllers diverted the passenger plane in time, the Civil Aviation Authority said.
The Air France Airbus A-300, en route from Paris to London’s Heathrow Airport, was descending from 7,000 feet to 4,000 feet when it came into the path of the Flying Tigers Boeing 747 cargo jet flying from Heathrow to Brussels at 6,000 feet, a spokesman for the authority said.
The Airbus came within one mile horizontally and 400 feet vertically of the Flying Tigers jumbo jet, carrying a crew of three, the spokesman said.
Both pilots took evasive action on instructions from air traffic controllers at separate control centers and landed safely.
