Newspaper readers and advertisers filed suit in a bid to stop the joint operation of the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press approved by Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III before he left office last week. The lawsuit, filed by a group called Michigan Citizens for an Independent Press, seeks a temporary restraining order to prevent Meese’s order from taking effect Thursday. Meanwhile, an estimated 500 workers at the newspapers who will not be offered jobs when the newspapers combine business operations today are getting layoff notices.
