Giant retailer Montgomery Ward has signed a consent agreement promising to stop making claims about home appliances that the government charges were false, the Federal Trade Commission announced. The FTC said Ward misrepresented the reliability of appliances and the need to buy a service contract when it sold them. Under terms of the consent agreement, Ward agreed to stop making the contested claims relating to maintenance of products and to stop making reliability claims for products unless it has evidence to support them.
