The Reagan Administration has asked Australia and New Zealand to cut back on meat exports to the United States, said Timothy Mackey, agricultural counselor at the Australian Embassy. U.S. Agriculture Department officials told him that foreign suppliers would have to voluntarily restrain meat exports before the end of the year or risk triggering an import quota. Under U.S. law, a quota on imports of beef, mutton and goat is activated if annual purchases from foreign sources are estimated to exceed 1.5 billion pounds, Mackey said.
