Gordon H. Scherer, 81, the ranking Republican on the old communist-hunting House Committee on Un-American Activities. He sat in the House of Representatives from 1953 to 1962 and served from 1953 to 1957 on the committee that investigated Americans believed to have ties with the Communist Party. President Richard M. Nixon appointed Scherer in 1970 as a member of the U.S. National Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. He represented the United States in the United Nations in 1972 and 1973. Scherer also served for one year as a member of UNESCO’s executive board in Paris. In Cincinnati on Saturday.
