Carlos Bendana, the former Nicaraguan Embassy charge d’affaires in West Germany, asked Bonn for political asylum, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. In a letter to Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Bendana, who left the Nicaraguan diplomatic service in May, said his safety and that of his family has been endangered by charges made by Nicaraguan Ambassador Hernan Estrada. Bendana, 42, said the ambassador has accused him of having contacts with the CIA and the U.S.-backed Contras who are seeking the overthrow of the Nicaraguan regime.
