Injuries Force UCLA’s Madkins to Miss Season

Gerald Madkins, a sophomore guard who was expected to start for the UCLA basketball team, will miss the season because of injuries he suffered last month in an on-campus traffic accident, Coach Jim Harrick said Tuesday.

“I’m definitely redshirting,” said Madkins, who was injured when the moped he was riding collided with a car. He was released Sunday after almost three weeks in the UCLA Medical Center.

Two weeks ago, Madkins underwent surgery in which two metal plates were inserted to repair multiple pelvic fractures. Also, abdominal muscles that had pulled away from the bone had to be attached, Harrick said.

“He’s in real bad shape,” Harrick said. “I’m worried about a full recovery.

“It’s a drastic blow to our club.”
