Jack Huntsman of Red Bank, N.J. took the lead after the first two of six races of the Lightning Class North American Championship Regatta at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. Colin Park, of Midland, Mich., was second. The top San Diegan was John Lyon in 15th.
Lenny Krawcheck of Charleston, S.C., led the Presidents Cup with Larry Swearingen of San Diego fourth. Tony McBride of Beaconfield, Canada led the Governors Cup division, and Fred Grant of San Diego was fourth.
BASEBALL
Chad Barry threw a 4-hitter and Jason Eskridge was 3 for 3 with a home run as La Mesa eliminated defending champion Caguas of Puerto Rico, 9-0, in the 37th Pony League World Series at Washington, Pa.
La Mesa scored four runs in the second and sixth innings, and Eskridge hit a bases-empty homer in the fourth. La Mesa meets the loser of Tuesday night’s second game between Seoul, South Korea, and Miami in an elimination game tonight.
GOLF
Phil Mickelson of San Diego made three birdies on the final five holes for a two-under 70 and the first-round lead in the junior golf Tournament of Champions at Roswell, Ga. Mickelson has won the past two 15-18 boys’ Tournament of Champions titles.
Harry Rudolph of La Jolla and Fred Chew of Oakland were one shot back at 71 on the par-72 Horseshoe Bend Country Club.
BOXING
Antoine T. Byrd will meet Tim Williams in the 10-round main event at the El Cortez Convention Center Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Byrd, the state super middleweight champion, has seven knockouts; his record is 11-1. Williams, 16-5, has 12 knockouts. For information, call 470-7300.
